Spotify announced a new home experience last Stream On. It combines the traditional Spotify experience with a vertically scrolling feed experience like TikTok or Reels.
You can switch between music, podcasts and audiobooks with the top tabs. You can preview content in a short amount of time. One content fills the entire screen and scrolling vertically moves to the next. Tap the content to save or share, explore more information, or play from the beginning. The previously introduced AI DJ function, smart shuffle, and auto-playing of podcasts are also included in this update.
Still, when you think of Spotify, nothing comes to mind other than personalized music recommendations. In order to compete with YouTube, which has become a content empire, people have to monopolize the moment they listen to the sound, so I wonder what effect this change in the home experience will have.
So far, Spotify has made various efforts to become more than music, but it has been difficult. Dreaming of becoming a home ground for creators, we invested heavily in podcasts, audiobooks, and live audio, but it was not easy to compete with YouTube. What will the future hold for Spotify's challenge to connect artists and listeners and dominate all activity related to sound?
