Apple has released the beta version of iOS 17. iOS 17 official version update is this fall. This release includes iMessage, password sharing features and more. In particular, StandBy and Name Drop are included this time. The iOS 17 beta version can be downloaded from the Apple Developer Center.
The most impressive feature is standby. It works when the iPhone is being charged horizontally on the MagSafe charger. You can bring a specific app or function to the fore. It turns your iPhone into a smart display. Users can get information without even turning on their iPhone.
Companies like LG's TV Gallery Mode, Amazon's Echo Show, and Google's Nest Hub have tried to make digital devices that people can use besides smartphones. Unlike smartphones, which are always carried around, we focused on the space where people stay for a long time.
Smart displays have several advantages over AI speakers that communicate only through words. While audio feedback requires you to wait and listen sequentially, visual feedback is more readily available because it is instantaneous. When using tools in the house, this visual feedback is a familiar UX.
It's exciting to experience new features in advance of their full release. In particular, with this feature, I could feel the concerns about the next smartphone UX. Recently, a foldable display has appeared, starting with the Galaxy, and provides a UX that allows you to check information at any time. Now, you can handle information without turning on your smartphone.
However, I can't imagine what kind of change the smart display unveiled now will really make. For information such as clocks and dates, existing objects are enough to solve the problem. It's not clear what problems it solves with the existing stuff. It would be nice if you could more specifically present the situations in which Standby must be used to successfully spread to smart displays.
