Updated iOS 16. The next-generation version of iOS 15, released at WWDC22, was released at 2:00 am on June 7, 2022 KST, and was officially distributed at 2:00 am on September 13, 2022. Here's a summary of the impressive UX we discovered and what we're looking forward to.
Create a home that suits you
The most impressive change in this version is the home and lock screen. You can choose the font you want, and you can check useful information such as calendar, battery level, and weather at a glance in the widget. Background images change dynamically over time. The dynamic wallpaper function of iMac and MacBook is now applied to iPhone.
Now, since you can cut out the desired area from a photo with a few touches on the iPhone, you can use the edited image to express depth by placing it above the clock or status display area fixed on the lock screen. The effect of depth is much more dramatic than before, which can only be felt by moving the smartphone.
The operating and viewing areas of the lock screen are divided. The most frequently used notifications are compressed and displayed in the lower area, and the top is designed to show the image and watch style you want. Also, in the viewing area, information that you would like to check right away as soon as you pick up your smartphone is displayed. You can create several types of home and lock screens, and the information displayed varies depending on the selected concentration mode. In many ways, it is a design that considers the always-on state provided by the iPhone 14.
Recently, new challenges have increased to give freshness to the mobile experience. Samsung expressed the UX before unlocking as a separate screen with a completely different structure. Google provided a UX that can drastically change the shape and color of existing design elements. With this update, Apple provided the experience of overcoming hardware limitations with software UI along with Dynamic Island. A concise UX that solves problems without adding elements.
Excellent image interpretation
Live text has been around for a while, but finally Korean language is also supported. Tap the desired subject in the photo to automatically isolate the subject from the background. (Apple calls it Visual Look Up.) You can find information about various objects or elements in a photo, such as birds, insects, and spiders, more easily and quickly. The currency in the image is converted to the desired currency by reflecting the exchange rate. You can translate text after pausing the video. In Spotlight Search, you can search for text in photos and videos.
Photos and videos that were difficult for machines to interpret can now be treated like text. Beyond simply searching for alternative text that describes an image, you can now search for information contained within an image. It is an area where big tech companies such as Google, Naver, and Meta are competing. I wonder how well Korean will be automated. A completely new UX will be possible if information can be explored only with visual language, without auditory language such as spoken and written language, which can only be used with deep knowledge of the same culture. I can't wait to see what an amazing world it will become if it is combined with AR.
Your own audio profile
A custom spatial audio feature has also been added that uses the TrueDepth camera to scan the shape of the user's ear. Spatial audio is a necessary skill when using earphones and headphones. Ordinary speakers allow people to know the location and direction of where sound is coming from, but earphones and headphones cannot perceive space because they are heard right next to your ears. What is needed at this time is spatial sound, and a newly added function is to provide optimal spatial sound by analyzing the shape and space of my ear with a camera.
In fact, I still don't understand how taking pictures provides better sound. Even after using the AirPods Pro after the update, I still don't see a big difference. I think there will be a significant difference when combined with the newly released AirPods Pro 2nd generation. Apple has released several audio devices over the years, but none have been very successful other than the AirPods. Looking forward to how we will complete a seamless hearing experience centered on AirPods in the future.
