JR East has unveiled three candidates for Suica's new image characters. The "Suica Penguin," which has been used since Suica's introduction in 2001, will end its role on March 31, 2027. The new characters will become the face of Suica starting April 1, 2027.
This replacement is linked to JR East's 'Suica Renaissance.' The company announced that it intends to expand Suica from a means of transportation and small payments into a service that reaches all aspects of daily life. The new character was also designed as a symbol to explain this change.
There are three candidates. A is a wreath with a line running from head to tail. B is a purple rabbit that combines the stability of blue with the movement of red. C is an orange character with a mole in its pocket.
Immediately after the reveal, there was an online reaction to keep the existing penguin. There were also opinions that the animals in Options B and C were not immediately recognizable. However, as time passed, Option B, which gave the most unfamiliar impression, spread like a meme. In some unofficial online polls, Option B received the highest percentage.
Voting will take place from September 8 to September 23, 2026. The candidate with the most votes will be announced on November 18, 2026, the 25th anniversary of Suica. The name will be determined through a public contest later. This project treats the replacement of long-standing characters as a language of service expansion. It also demonstrates how strongly memorable forms operate, rather than just familiar cuteness.
