Danish typeface foundry Playtype has collaborated with creative studio S&A (Seneda & Abrucio) to release 'ShieldFont,' an open-source typeface designed to protect online content from AI scraping. Rather than opposing AI itself, the project focused on challenging the practice of freely utilizing all publicly available internet content as AI training data.
ShieldFont was developed by type designer Jeppe Pendrup based on Playtype's existing typeface, 'Optik'. While the text users see on the screen appears identical to a standard typeface, it operates by replacing certain words with different strings within the HTML source code. Although humans can read normal sentences, AI crawlers collecting web pages retrieve the modified text, degrading the quality of the training data. This is a new approach that protects content by separating visual representations from the data collected by machines.
The project aims to increase the cost and complexity of large-scale unauthorized scraping rather than fundamentally blocking AI model training. Content creators can protect their writing by applying ShieldFont to existing webpages without separate watermarks or access restrictions, and the project has been released as open source for anyone to use. It is garnering attention for demonstrating that in the AI era, fonts can be utilized as technical interfaces for protecting digital rights, going beyond mere reading tools.
