A United Airlines passenger plane returned to its departure point due to the name of a Bluetooth device. On May 30, 2026, United Airlines Flight 236, en route from Newark Liberty International Airport in the United States to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, returned after takeoff due to security concerns. The aircraft was a Boeing 767 carrying 190 passengers and 12 crew members.
The problem was the name of a Bluetooth device found on board. It was reported that a passenger spotted a device labeled "BOMB" in the list of nearby Bluetooth devices during takeoff and notified the flight crew. Although the crew repeatedly instructed passengers to turn off their Bluetooth connections, some devices continued to appear, and the airline decided to return to Newark after consulting with its headquarters.
The plane landed safely in Newark. Passengers then disembarked, and Port Authority police and sniffer dogs inspected the aircraft. The TSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection conducted security checks on the passengers again. United Airlines described this measure as a “precautionary step,” and the aircraft departed again early the next morning with a new crew.
