Google Maps Gemini

Google is revolutionizing the navigation experience by fully introducing generative AI, Gemini, to its map service.

Google has expanded Gemini's functionality to allow users to interact naturally with it within Maps, exploring destinations and surroundings. Users can ask questions like, "Is there an affordable restaurant with vegetarian options nearby?" or "How's the parking there?" and Gemini will synthesize map data and local reviews to provide answers and adjust routes. Gemini also integrates with calendar apps, allowing users to automatically add requests like, "Add soccer practice tomorrow at 5 p.m.".

The key to this update is Google's implementation of "all-knowing assistant-like navigation." Amanda Moore, Product Manager for Google Maps, explained, "Our goal is to help drivers get the information they need, at the exact moment they need it, for a stress-free journey." Gemini goes beyond simple voice commands to understand multi-step conversations and even supports voice-activated reporting of situations like traffic accidents and flooding.

The way directions are presented has also become more realistic. Instead of the traditional "Turn right in 500 feet," directions are now based on prominent buildings or businesses, such as "Turn right past Thai Siam Restaurant." This is because Gemini analyzes over 250 million location data points and street images to identify landmarks visible in real-world view.

Additionally, a "Predictive Traffic Alert" feature has been added, providing advance notification of accidents or construction delays along your regular route, even if you don't have Maps turned on. Even if you're using a music app, notifications will appear, allowing you to make detours in advance.

After arriving, you can use the "Lens with Gemini" feature to point your camera at nearby locations and get information in a conversational manner. For example, ask questions like, "What kind of restaurant is this?" or "Why is it so popular?" and Gemini will respond based on reviews and photos.

Google emphasized that these features are based on real place data to prevent the creation of false information. "All information is based on real, registered place information, so there will be no fake places being suggested," Moore said.

This Gemini integration is free for users who are logged in to a Google account and will be rolled out sequentially to Android and iOS, followed by Google's embedded systems for vehicles.
