OpenAI's AI-based video generation app, Sora, has officially launched for Android. This launch will begin in seven countries: the United States, Korea, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, and can be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store without an invitation code.
Sora, which debuted on iOS in September of last year, topped the App Store immediately after its release, surpassing 1 million downloads in just five days. With its Android launch, its user base is expected to expand even further.
The Android version offers the same features as the iOS version. The "Cameo" feature, which allows users to create various activities based on their faces, is particularly noteworthy. The generated videos are shared in a feed format similar to TikTok, allowing users to explore and interact with other users' content. Through this, OpenAI aims to strengthen its position in the AI short-form video market, competing with Meta's "Vibes," TikTok, and Instagram.
However, legal and ethical controversies persist. Initially, some users were criticized for creating videos mocking Martin Luther King Jr., and in Japan, the government issued a warning for the spread of videos imitating popular manga and anime. In response, OpenAI restricted the creation of content related to historical figures and switched from an "opt-out" policy to an "opt-in" policy for copyrighted characters.
OpenAI plans to add AI character cameos using pets or objects in the future, basic video editing tools (such as clip stitching), and the ability for users to create personalized feeds.
