YouTube Shorts Viewing Limit Timer Introduced

YouTube is introducing a viewing limit timer for its short video feed, "Shorts." Users can set a daily viewing time limit, and a "take a break" pop-up will appear when the limit is reached. While it can be dismissed with a single tap, it serves as a reminder of how much time has elapsed.

This feature was first discovered in Android app files earlier this year and has been gradually rolling out to users worldwide since recently. You can adjust the "Shorts Timer" within the "Digital Wellbeing" settings menu, and the break reminder is designed to appear after the current video ends to avoid interruptions during the middle of the video.

YouTube has offered app-wide "Break Reminders" and "Sleep Reminders" since 2018. However, Shorts are a core content format on YouTube, generating billions of views daily. Their short length and autoplay structure make them particularly engaging. Accordingly, Google described the feature as "an optional tool to help with attention and self-regulation."

This timer is evaluated as part of "choice architecture." It's a subtle intervention that supports users' voluntary intentions, offering them a chance to pause and reflect without inducing excessive smartphone immersion. Psychologists estimate that such subtle interventions can reduce daily usage time by tens of minutes.

YouTube plans to add a "Parental Controls" feature next year that will allow parents to directly limit their children's viewing time on Shorts. Once enabled, children will no longer be able to arbitrarily dismiss break notifications.

Competing platforms like TikTok and Instagram already offer similar "viewing time limits" features, and Apple and Google offer operating system-level controls for overall app usage through "Screen Time" and "Digital Wellbeing." However, YouTube has now enabled separate management of Shorts, enabling "self-regulation by content type."
