Spotify introduced a new feature, "Messages," on August 26, 2025. This feature allows you to share music, podcasts, and audiobooks directly with friends and family, and will be gradually rolled out to free and premium users ages 16 and older via the mobile app.
Spotify has long recognized that users have been sharing music through external platforms. Now, however, they've made it possible to share content and chat directly within Spotify, without having to open a separate app. "Messages" goes beyond simple sharing, creating a one-on-one space where users can discuss and exchange feelings about the content they're listening to.
While listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks, simply tap the share icon on the playback screen, select a friend, and send them a message. Upon accepting the message, the recipient can respond with emojis or text, and you can share content in a chat window. You can view your message list by clicking your profile picture in the top left corner of the app.
Spotify automatically suggests conversation partners who you've previously Jammed, Blended, or created collaborative playlists with, or who are on the same Family or Duo plan.
Security and privacy have also been enhanced. Users can decline message requests, block specific users, and even disable messaging entirely if desired. All messages are encrypted using industry-standard encryption during storage and transmission, and illegal or harmful content is automatically detected and moderated by our moderators. Problematic content can be easily reported by long-pressing and selecting "Report."
