Discord redesigned its mobile app. Discord attempted to become a chat app for more people beyond gaming in 2020 as online chatting became active due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, as growth slowed and legislation such as the Children's Online Safety Act was pushed forward, the company decided to focus on games again.
So that you can enjoy games with your friends, we've refined the entire app experience so that you can conveniently communicate via text or voice and watch video streaming. Visual elements such as illustrations and icons have also been updated.
The server tab and DM tab have been combined into one. The mental model was confusing because it has a different structure from the desktop, but it has been unified. As you browse the server, you can see who has sent you DMs. In the Home tab, you'll see a Messages icon and all servers in the left sidebar. When you tap the Messages icon, you'll see all the DMs and group chats you've participated in. Tapping on a server will display the server's details within the Server tab. Active Now in Messages shows what your friends are doing right now, so you can easily talk to them when you want to hang out. You can pin frequently used chats to the top of the Messages tab.
The audio and video call UI has also changed. You can preview the conversation without joining the call by clicking the speech bubble icon to the right of Join Voice. If you swipe from the bottom to the top during a voice call, the text chat in the chat room will appear. Tapping the rocket icon at the bottom of the screen will bring up all the activities you can do, like screen sharing.
Mobile search filters have also been improved. It was a good structure for exploring various elements such as messages, media, and pins, but it was difficult to start a search from a channel at a lower level and then search a server at a higher level. You will now see the “in: #channel” filter in the area where you enter text, so deleting that text will allow you to search the entire server.
The saturation slider from desktop is also available on mobile. Added a Midnight/OLED theme to all platforms, which is slightly darker than Discord's default dark mode. If the color of buttons or notifications is irritating, you can also adjust saturation and contrast in accessibility settings.
