New Jeans Music Video Design: Exploring Mise-en-scène and Graphics

In celebration of their summer comeback, New Jeans has released several music videos for their 2nd EP 'Get Up'. The music and videos are of a high level of perfection that each one looks like the title song. From the design point of view, I looked at the aesthetic elements of several music videos such as 'New Jeans' and 'Cool with you'.

New Jeans

'New Jeans', which used the group name as it is, drew attention by collaborating with Cartoon Network's <The Powerpuff Girls>. There was an explosive response to the creation of the Powerpuff Girls based on the members' personalities.

The music video goes back and forth between 2D and 3D to express the members of New Jeans in various ways. Turn into polygons, pixel art, and more. In line with the era of short-form videos, it is unconventional to keep attracting attention with style so that there is no time to be bored even for one minute and one second. It was like watching the recently released Spider-Man: Across the Universe.

In the middle, there is a part that can be mistaken for a recording of the process of creating graphics, but this must have been a screen that was actually directed with great effort.

The logo artwork for the music video uses shiny, retro-gaming typography that suits the animation.

Cool with you

This is a music video that became a hot topic with appearances by Jeong Ho-yeon and Leung Jo-wi. This is the story of Eros in love. New Genes members become angels and observe Eros. Ho-yeon Jeong, who becomes a person for the sake of love, and Jo-wi Leung, who left a strong impact in a short moment, make this a great music video.

It feels like watching a Korean drama like a short story. The old film feeling in between feels almost like a symbol of the retro feel of New Jeans. The video composition divided into A Side and B Side feels like a cassette tape.

The logo artwork used in the music video uses an Art Nouveau-style ornate typeface that you would find in the middle of Paris.

ETA

'Estimated Time of Arrival' means the estimated time of arrival, and is often used in chatting, and is used to mean 'when are you coming?' 250 and Beenzino participated. A Korean name appears in the middle, and there is speculation that Beenzino's influence may be significant.

This is a memorable music video made in collaboration with Apple. I participated in Apple's Shot on iPhone and shot a music video with the iPhone 14 Pro. Because of this, I uploaded 1080p unlike other music videos that are 4k.

The logo artwork used in the music video is very concise, befitting a collaboration with Apple. The Apple logo with rabbit ears bounces like a rabbit and soon turns into Apple's apple logo.

Super Shy

It is the first music video to be released, and it is a very popular song, ranking 4th on Spotify. Korean hip-hop group XXX's FRNK and Kim Sim-ya participated.

The video shot in Lisbon, Portugal seems to smell like summer on the screen. The group dance in the style of a flash mob and the composition of dividing the space with lines give the impression of looking at a photograph.

The logo artwork used in the music video is a colorful fluorescent color gradation that reminds us of Dance Dance Revolution in the 00s. Looks like I'll have to jump on the scaffolding soon.

📕 Editor's Notes

The directing is so great that each music video can be called a short short film. The overall texture is so solid that it feels like a piece of art in itself, rather than a decoration for New Jeans members. You can get a glimpse of not only visual aesthetics but also the extremes of aesthetics from a design point of view.

It is a wonderful design that allows you to feel what it means to have the best people come together to create the best quality results. It almost feels like all existing directing techniques have been condensed into one.
