Source Type, a Zurich-based type platform in Switzerland, has unveiled a new typeface family called Bernie. Bernie was designed by Laurenz Brunner and Stefan Fitze. Source Type describes the typeface as having a “cute, classic, sophisticated, and bold” personality.
Bernie is a typeface that continues the trend of soft serif fonts. According to the official description, it was influenced by the work of Lucien Bernhard, as well as Windsor, Cooper Black, and American Typewriter. While based on rounded strokes and soft serifs, each letter gives a somewhat irregular impression. It is well-suited for display titles or short phrases.
The family consists of four styles: Black, Bold, Medium, and Regular. You can test the entire family on the type tester at the Source Type website. It also includes several style sets, such as a tailed a, a single g, a rounded ball shape, straight-legged M and R, curled alternate letters, different ampersands, and a rounded i.
The glyph composition is extensive. It provides Latin extended characters, ligatures, Roman numerals, arrows, constellation symbols, hand shapes, and more. File formats include OTF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2. Design and production support were handled by Stefan Fitze and Rongyi Tang, while mastering was performed by Wei Huang.
