Spotify Experiments with AI Chatbot That Finds Music Through Conversation

Spotify is experimenting with conversational AI features for its premium subscribers. The new feature, named “Talk to Spotify,” is a chatbot-style interface that appears on the mobile app’s home screen and current playback screen. Users can directly input their requests into a familiar AI chat input field or make voice requests by pressing the microphone icon. Spotify is testing that this feature will allow users to explore and play not only music but also audiobooks and podcasts in a conversational manner.

This feature aims for broader applications than a simple search bar. For example, users can request music related to specific moods, activities, genres, or artists, or ask to find podcasts and audiobooks worth listening to. It also operates by providing personalized recommendations based on the user's playlists and preferences. This approach helps users discover content within the flow of conversation without having to navigate through separate menus or change their search terms multiple times. It is an attempt to extend the algorithmic recommendation and personalized playlist experience that Spotify has already provided into an AI chatbot interface.

In music streaming services, AI is establishing itself as a new way to interact with apps, going beyond simply enhancing recommendation quality. Spotify's AI chatbot experiment demonstrates a trend toward integrating search, recommendation, and playback commands into a single conversational screen. In particular, the placement of these features on the home screen and the current playback screen suggests a design intended to allow users to invoke the AI at both the moment of selecting and listening to music. As this is still in the experimental phase, the official launch date, supported countries, and whether the feature will be expanded to all Premium subscribers remain unconfirmed. However, it is clear that Spotify is enhancing its AI-based music recommendation and podcast discovery experiences.
