Google is preparing an update to further personalize the driving experience by integrating its AI assistant, Gemini, into the navigation app Waze. This change focuses on expanding Waze's key features around conversational voice commands. A total of four updates have been announced, two of which explicitly feature the application of Gemini. Waze enhances voice-based interactions to allow drivers to receive traffic information or find destinations without directly manipulating the screen.
One of the key changes is the improvement of the conversational reporting feature, first introduced in 2024. Drivers will now be able to report road conditions, such as traffic accidents, congestion, and obstacles, using natural language voice commands. Beyond simple accident reporting, users can also voice-suggest content requiring map data correction, such as road closures, incorrect route information, and outdated house numbers. As Waze is a service that has updated real-time traffic information based on user participation, the Gemini-based conversational feature is expected to play a role in streamlining the reporting process and improving map accuracy.
Another feature utilizing Gemini is destination search. Instead of entering fixed search terms, drivers can find locations by speaking conditions in a conversational manner. For instance, if a driver voices a request including time, type of location, and usage conditions—such as finding a coffee shop that is currently open—Waze suggests suitable destinations. This update demonstrates that navigation apps are expanding beyond simple route guidance tools into auxiliary services that provide contextually relevant information while driving. In particular, Waze’s enhanced AI voice command capabilities are seen as a way to reduce driver distraction and increase the speed and convenience of user-reported traffic information.
