Samsung Messages App Suspended in the U.S.

Samsung Messages, Samsung Electronics' default messaging app, will be discontinued in the U.S. market in July 2026. While Samsung has recommended that users switch to Google Messages, practical workarounds for users who wish to keep the existing app are also being disclosed. This measure is related to support for the Messaging Standard (RCS), cross-device connectivity, and changes in security update policies.

Methods for maintenance include rolling back to an existing app version and blocking automatic updates. Users must save the current version via an APK backup and then turn off Google Play's automatic update settings or block updates through device management policies. However, it should be noted that rolling back and manual installation may entail a risk of exposing security vulnerabilities and causing compatibility issues.

Another workaround suggested is to store message data and settings using third-party backup tools. Securing Samsung Cloud or local backups in advance can minimize data loss during the transition process. While some features will remain seamless in Google Messages due to the collaboration between Samsung and Google, there is a possibility that some Samsung-specific features may disappear. Users are advised to back up their data and prepare for the transition before the service is discontinued.
