The U.S. government has unveiled a limited-edition passport design commemorating the 250th anniversary of independence. The State Department explained that this passport is a special edition created to celebrate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and maintains the same security features as existing next-generation passports. Issuance will begin on July 6, 2026, at the Washington Passport Office in Washington, D.C., but applicants who apply online, by mail, or through overseas diplomatic missions will not be eligible.
The controversial aspect is the interior design of the passport. In the released images, a large portrait of President Donald Trump is placed above the text of the Declaration of Independence. The opposite page features a scene of the Declaration of Independence known to be a 1818 work by John Trumbull, with the text "United States of America 250" added at the bottom. The White House introduced it as a "Patriot Passport.".

It has been reported that approximately 40,000 standard-sized commemorative passports have been prepared for issuance at the Washington Passport Office, and the basic passport fee is the same as that of a regular passport. However, they can be obtained by visiting the Washington Passport Office with an urgent appointment or by applying at a designated special reception event.
