Netflix Unveils New Mobile Experiences, Collections, and Games

Netflix unveiled new mobile experiences, content collections, and a gaming vision for the Asia-Pacific region. Through the APAC Product Innovation Showcase, Netflix introduced its future product direction, focusing on mobile apps, personalized content discovery, and kids' gaming experiences.

At this showcase, Netflix Chief Product and Technology Officer (CPTO) Elizabeth Stone explained how Netflix's global product vision is being applied to members in the Asia-Pacific region. Netflix presented making the entertainment experience more personalized, interactive, and immersive through technology as its key direction.

The first change revealed is a new mobile experience. Netflix will introduce an updated mobile app for members in Korea and Japan this coming July. The new mobile app will feature a vertical video feed called "Clips." Users can watch short clips while adding content to their "Wishlist," sharing favorite moments with friends, or navigating to the page to play the content immediately.

The clip video feed is personalized based on members' viewing history and engagement. Netflix plans to use this to help users easily discover new content even during short breaks in their daily lives. In the future, themed clip video collections will also be introduced for enjoyment based on mood or genre. These will include short videos of various formats, such as trending scenes from reality shows, behind-the-scenes footage, and highlights from podcasts.

Netflix is also expanding gaming experiences for kids and families. Lisa Burgess, General Manager of Netflix Games Studio, introduced gaming as an important experience that enhances the value of the Netflix membership. Netflix is strengthening the gaming experience so that members can go beyond simply watching content and actively play within the stories.

At its center is 'Netflix Playground,' a dedicated space for children. On June 20, Netflix will add the 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' game collection to Netflix Playground. The collection includes six new mini-games, such as 'Honmoon Beats,' where players tap the screen to the music beat, and 'DJ Mixer,' which allows players to change the tempo of songs or add sound effects.

Netflix Playground is available to paid Netflix members at no additional cost and is free of ads and in-app purchases. It is also designed to align with the existing Netflix Kids profile and content curation flow. Netflix plans to continuously add games and interactive features based on popular kids' series, movies, and characters in the future.

In the content exploration area, we are enhancing curated collections. Netflix provides content rows and collection pages to help members more easily discover their next content based on topics and tastes they already have interests in. We utilize diverse contexts, ranging from themes that resonate with members worldwide, such as holidays and constellations, to collections that reflect regional cultural moments, like India's Diwali and Japan's Golden Week.

Recently, Netflix also introduced the 'Watch Your Favorite Books' collection for book lovers. Eugenie Yeo, Senior Director of Product Merchandising for Netflix APAC, explained that recommendations are meaningful when they feel like content tailored specifically for each individual member. Netflix has presented a direction to combine recommendation technology with human senses to make the process of finding content itself an easier and more enjoyable experience.

This announcement demonstrates Netflix's trend of connecting mobile, content discovery, and gaming into a single personalized entertainment experience. The vertical clip feed, themed collections, and Kids' Games space are all product changes designed to enable members to discover content faster, stay connected longer, and enjoy it in more diverse ways.
