Samsung has added a U.S. passport-based digital ID feature to Samsung Wallet. Samsung Electronics launched 'Samsung ID with CLEAR' in collaboration with identity verification company CLEAR.
This feature allows U.S. passport holders to register a digital ID in Samsung Wallet. Users can verify their identity at over 250 TSA security checkpoints across the United States by tapping their phone or scanning a QR code. It can also be used for age verification or entry checks at some stadiums.
Registration is done through the Samsung Wallet app. Tap '+' on the Quick Access tab, select Digital IDs, and add Samsung ID with CLEAR. A valid U.S. passport is required, and you must go through CLEAR's verification process.
Security is managed with Samsung Knox, biometric authentication, and PINs. Samsung explains that digital ID data is encrypted and stored on the device.
However, it does not completely replace a physical passport. Currently, it can only be used for domestic travel within the United States and at select locations. A physical passport is still required for international entry and exit. While this is not a feature that Korean users will immediately experience, it marks an example of Samsung Wallet expanding from a payment app into a wallet platform that accommodates identification and travel documents.
