While some reports introduced it as smart jewelry worn around the neck, describing it as a device that listens to surrounding conversations to provide summaries and notifications, more specific follow-up reports and statements from the founders reveal that Starboy is closer to a digital pet worn on a bag or body than a productivity tool connected to a smartphone. In fact, Daniel Koontz, the creator of the product, described Starboy as a device that does not connect to a mobile phone and does not utilize large language models.
Starboy reacts to its surroundings through a camera, microphone, accelerometer, and temperature sensor. However, the core focus is not on creating an AI assistant that handles tasks for you, but on building a small being that behaves like a living organism. This direction is demonstrated by the fact that over 500 animations run at 60 frames per second on a 400×400 OLED display, and each unit is designed with a unique personality through the application of over 5,000 different eye combinations. The exterior design also follows the conventions of accessories and collectibles rather than function-oriented devices. The emphasis on material options such as aluminum, stainless steel, brass, and crystal is also in the same vein.
The price is reported to range from the $249 to $439 range, with a target shipment date of September 2026. What makes this product interesting is that, instead of making AI more capable, it steps back from the obsession with AI efficiency and productivity. While the market has recently been flooded with wearables that listen to and summarize conversations or manage schedules, Starboy twists this trend by asking whether a machine can become a presence that simply stays by one's side, rather than a tool that assists.
