A concept for a portable mini keyboard that allows you to instantly translate inspiration into music while on the go has been unveiled. Proposed by emerging Korean designer Jang Woo-jin, Everglow is a handle-type instrument small enough to fit in a bag, positioned as a music sketchbook for musicians. It originated from the realization that it is difficult to fully capture the nuances of expression using only smartphone memos or voice recordings in situations where melodies and lyrics come to mind at unexpected moments, such as while showering or right before falling asleep.
Everglow is based on a one-octave composition and is designed with a simple, triangular shape. The design intent is to reduce the burden of having to turn on a laptop or computer and lower the distraction caused by excessive features, allowing for the rapid recording of momentary emotions. Jang Woo-jin explained that the device focuses on capturing instantaneous emotions and subtle nuances.
The input method is also unique. The keys are highly responsive to touch, and built-in pressure sensors detect finger movements. It has been suggested that sliding upwards while holding down a key allows for speed adjustment and changes in effect levels. Left and right movement is designed to support pitch changes in semitone increments, with the sensor recognizing the direction. It has been evaluated as having enhanced both visual form and tactile clarity.
It also includes a feature that partially mimics the physical sensation of playing a guitar. Touching multiple keys horizontally simultaneously activates the strumming function, enabling playback that feels like scraping during chord playing. Furthermore, a generative AI-based sound system has been added, suggesting a flow that goes beyond simply recording improvisational ideas to vary and expand songs on the spot. The AI was introduced as assisting in compositional expansion by generating additional harmonies or recalling and overlapping previously recorded elements.
The work results were presented with a structure where they are backed up to a companion app. The exported files were designed with compatibility with major music software in mind, emphasizing the ability to continue cumulative composition within a small device. Targeting both portability and expressiveness, this concept demonstrates the potential for further expansion of AI-based interface experiments in the mobile creative tool market.
