TikTok Unveils Wellness Features for Digital Health

TikTok has unveiled new digital wellbeing features aimed at reducing the amount of mindless scrolling among its teen users. The platform has completely revamped its screen time management page, adding several tools aimed at fostering positive habits and a healthy user experience. These changes, developed based on teens' actual usage patterns, focus on helping them self-regulate their usage behavior rather than relying on burdensome blocking methods.

The most notable feature is the Positive Affirmations Journal. With over 120 prompts, users can set daily goals and organize their emotions. Users can download the file and use it. A sound generator that plays soothing background sounds like rain or waves, as well as a module that helps with simple breathing exercises, are also included, encouraging users to take short, in-app breaks. These features received high usage rates in early testing, demonstrating their closeness to the needs of actual users.

TikTok has also introduced a badge system that rewards users who self-regulate their usage habits. For example, users can earn a "Sleep Mission" badge by avoiding using the app at night. Other badges can be earned by meeting a self-imposed daily time limit or checking weekly usage reports. Inviting other users to participate in the mission is also a challenge, providing a social incentive.

This design is based on recent research showing that overly strict restrictions can be counterproductive. Reflecting on feedback from its Teen Advisory Group and expert reviews, TikTok determined that positive reinforcement, rather than mandatory blocking, is more effective in fostering consistent, healthy user behavior. In fact, when testing this feature, the company reported a significant increase in visits to the new Wellness screen compared to the existing Screen Time menu.

The app links to a wellness page when launched late at night or when a user reaches a self-imposed time limit. From there, users can access journaling and sound tools directly, or complete missions to earn badges. Following TikTok's introduction of parental supervision earlier this year and its recent release of AI-generated content restrictions, this update continues a trend of strengthening safety and mental health support strategies across the platform.
