OpenAI has officially released its first AI-powered web browser, ChatGPT Atlas. Atlas is initially available for macOS, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions coming soon. OpenAI has announced that it will open the early access version to all free users.
The core of this browser is the complete integration of ChatGPT with the web. Users can ask questions or request analysis from ChatGPT directly from the sidebar on the side of the screen, without having to leave the page or copy and paste text. For example, functions such as summarizing site content, comparing products, and analyzing data can be performed directly within the browser.
The "Sidecar" feature is already a popular feature in several AI browsers, including Perplexity's "Comet" and The Browser Company's "Dia." OpenAI has added "Browser Memories" to this feature, allowing it to remember the websites a user has visited and the context within them, providing personalized responses and suggestions.
Another feature is "Agent Mode." This feature allows ChatGPT to perform tasks directly within the browser at the user's command. For example, it can automatically handle tasks like planning a trip, searching for flights, shopping, and summarizing team documents. However, the initial version is only available to users of ChatGPT's Plus, Pro, and Business plans.
Enhanced security controls have also been introduced. Users can control which sites ChatGPT can view, and can delete specific pages or their entire browsing history. Furthermore, Atlas does not use user browsing data to train AI models by default, and can only include data with user consent.
