Airbnb founder Joe Gebbia becomes US CDO

The appointment of Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia as the first Chief Design Officer (CDO) in the U.S. government has caught the attention of both Washington politics and the design community. Gebbia, formerly Airbnb's Chief Product Officer (CPO), will now lead the White House National Design Studio and oversee the "America by Design" initiative.

President Donald Trump signed this executive order last week, emphasizing that "government services must be reborn as beautiful and functional." He expressed his commitment to transforming the usability of digital services accessible to the public, including federal agency websites and mobile apps. Joe Gebbia stated, "Government services must be as satisfying as the Apple Store," adding, "Design is not simply a visual element; it's the foundation for creating experience and trust."

Gebbia, a designer by background, has led projects ranging from modular furniture to accommodation platforms. His appointment is seen as an attempt to bring Silicon Valley's creative problem-solving approach to public administration. In an interview with Axios, he stated, "It's unfair that government digital interfaces are outdated. Services funded by taxpayer money should provide a world-class user experience."

The National Design Studio will operate for three years and will collaborate with federal agencies to establish design standards, reduce duplication of costs, and expand digital accessibility. Specifically, each agency head is required to submit initial results by July 4, 2026. The White House described this as "a turning point in addressing digital blind spots and enhancing trust in public services."

Gebbia has already entered public administration, working on a project to improve federal employee retirement procedures at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He also gained experience integrating technology and design through his service on the Tesla board. Elon Musk and David Sachs, the White House AI and Cryptocurrency Director, congratulated him on his appointment, praising his decision to "put his private-sector expertise to the public good."

This appointment aligns with the Trump administration's "Beautiful Federal Civic Architecture" initiative. This initiative aims to improve the citizen experience by redefining the design language across the public realm, from physical spaces to digital platforms. Joe Gebbia, who transformed hospitality culture through Airbnb, is now drawing attention to whether he can transform Americans' everyday administrative experiences.
