Google has unveiled its next-generation smartphone, the Pixel 10 series, highlighting artificial intelligence (AI) as a key competitive edge. At the "Made by Google" event held on August 20th, Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Global Devices and Services, defined the product as "personal intelligence," explaining that AI has evolved beyond being a simple tool to become a close companion to individuals' lives. Unlike past announcements, this one drew attention with a guest appearance on stage, featuring celebrities demonstrating how AI capabilities can be utilized in real-life situations.
The feature that garnered the most attention was "Voice Translate." This feature translates phone calls in real time, allowing users to speak in English and hear the other person in Spanish, and vice versa. The translation process even reflects the speaker's accent and tone, resulting in a natural conversation. All calculations are processed by on-device AI based on the Tensor G5 chip, ensuring privacy protection.
"Magic Cue" is a feature that analyzes the user's apps and proactively provides necessary information. It identifies restaurant reservations in the user's schedule and suggests messages, automatically linking flight schedules to photos, and provides personalized information. However, some users may find this intrusive, so access permissions can be customized.
Camera functionality has also been significantly enhanced. The "Ask Gemini" feature allows users to adjust lighting or adjust composition simply by text, while the "Camera Coach" guides users step-by-step through shooting angles and composition, enabling even beginners to achieve professional-level results. This goes beyond simply being a shooting tool and offers a photography education function.
In addition, "Pixel Journal," which supports personal journaling, has been added. This app uses AI to suggest writing prompts and analyze writing patterns to facilitate self-reflection, but it is expected to be controversial because it involves AI handling personal records. Furthermore, the "Take a Message" feature adds convenience to everyday life by allowing AI to receive messages on your behalf when you can't answer a call, providing summaries and follow-up actions.
Pixel 10 Pro lineup buyers will receive a free one-year subscription to Google AI Pro, worth $20 per month. This includes the Gemini high-end model, AI video creation tool Flow, the LM learning notebook, and expanded AI features in Gmail and Docs, covering a wide range of productivity and creativity areas.
