Hyundai Card has joined hands with world-renowned contemporary artist Tom Sachs to present an experimental project that reinterprets credit card plates as a work of art. On the 8th, Hyundai Card unveiled the ‘Hyundai Card Tom Sachs “Credit Card”’ and announced that it would open a new horizon in credit card design.
This collaboration is gaining attention as a collaboration between Hyundai Card and Tom Sachs, a leading artist in the bricolage technique that elevates everyday materials into art. Beyond simply transferring artwork onto cards, the credit card plate itself has been completed as a form of modern art.
Tom Sachs has collaborated with various global brands such as Nike, Levi's, and Helinox to blur the boundaries between art and daily life, and is actively communicating with Korean audiences through the 'Hyundai Card Culture Project 29 Tom Sachs Exhibition' currently being held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul.
The 'Tom Sachs Credit Card' consists of four types in total. 'Metal' made with duralumin and bronze, which are used as aircraft materials, 'Plywood' that delicately expresses the texture of wooden plywood, 'Fluorescent Red' with strong color contrast, and 'White' version with Sachs' handwriting.
The 'Metal' version is presented in a card package in the form of a 'handcrafted box' designed by Sachs himself. This box fully reflects the artist's unique sense of bricolage, maximizing artistry and originality.
A Hyundai Card official said, “This project is an attempt to provide consumers with a new usage experience by adding artistic value to the everyday tool called a card,” adding, “We hope that even the simple act of taking the card out of the wallet will feel like a special moment.”
The 'Tom Sachs Credit Card' is provided as a special design plate rather than a separate financial product, and users of Hyundai Card's 'Originals' lineup of DONG, X, Z, and ZERO cards can apply for and keep it together with their existing cards. New members can also apply for it at the same time as signing up for the card.
