BUILD WARS, a web design showdown between humans and AI

Recently, the digital design community had a showdown between DesignJoy founder Brett Williams (aka @BrettFromDJ) and Lovable.dev’s Henrik Wes, representing tools Webflow and Lovable.dev respectively, arguing about the merits of no-code and AI-driven design.

The debate began when Henrik Wes pointed out the limitations of Webflow at X and highlighted the potential of Lovable.dev, a tool that uses AI to generate code and automate design tasks, which Henrik claimed would go beyond traditional no-code platforms.

Brett used his experience completing hundreds of projects with DesignJoy to quickly implement intuitive UIs and sophisticated animations. Despite his lack of experience, Henrik was able to quickly produce early prototypes using the power of AI. However, from the middle of the process, Lovable’s AI struggled with unexpected bugs and repeated revisions, leaving Henrik frustrated.

After the showdown, it was announced that Brett had won by a narrow margin in the audience vote. His Webflow work was highly rated for its completeness and usability, while Henrik’s AI-based work was considered innovative but unfinished. “Brett’s victory was expected, but Henrik’s fight despite his lack of experience showed the potential of AI tools,” the Indie Hackers article said. The US gambling platform Polymarket even wagered a whopping $200,000 on the showdown.
