Instagram has announced a new app called Edits, similar to TikTok’s video editing app Capcut. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri explains that the app is designed for creators who want a video editing tool, and it is available for pre-order on the iOS App Store now.
In his announcement video, Mosseri introduced Edits as a collection of creative tools, not just a simple video editing app. The app includes tabs for inspiration, a way to organize your ideas, a high-quality camera, general editing tools, and the ability to share drafts with friends and creators. It also provides a real-time analytics dashboard for uploading videos to Instagram, as well as deeper insights such as follower and non-follower engagement, and how often your videos are skipped.
Edits will support editing tools like chroma key and video overlays, and will include features commonly used in TikTok videos. Mosseri said Meta has been developing the app for several months and that it will take a different direction from Capcut. He said Edits will offer a wider range of creative tools and target a relatively small user base.
According to the App Store description, Edits does not add a watermark when exporting videos. This seems to be a differentiating factor from Capcut, which applies a watermark in the free version.
Edits will be available on iOS starting March 13, with an Android version coming soon. Mosseri said the early version may not be perfect, but he hopes creators will find the app useful for their creative work.
