Red Note, the app that emerged after TikTok's departure

As the TikTok ban is set to go into effect in the US, the Chinese social media app Red Note is rapidly emerging as an alternative to TikTok. Recently, Red Note has become the number one download in the free app category of the US App Store. Creators and users are being spotted moving to Red Note as they look for alternatives ahead of the TikTok ban.

RedNote offers the ability to post photos, short videos, and text, and is organized into feeds such as Follow, Explore, and Nearby. RedNote, which started out as a shopping platform, now has over 300 million monthly active users and generated about $1 billion in revenue last year.

TikTok creators are encouraging the platform switch, and RedNote is seeing a lot of posts saying, “I’m moving from TikTok.” RedNote users are welcoming TikTok users, teaching them how to use the app and introducing them to Chinese culture.

What is noteworthy is that users tend to prefer Red Note over SNS operated by Meta. This is analyzed to be due to growing concerns about the possibility of fake news spreading after Meta relaxed its content review policy.

The TikTok ban law prohibits TikTok from operating unless its parent company ByteDance sells its U.S. business rights to TikTok to a U.S. company. TikTok has taken legal action, but has lost in the first and second trials and is awaiting the Supreme Court’s final ruling.

As TikTok users in the US migrate to the new platform, Red Note’s popularity is expected to continue to grow. However, the long-term growth potential of Red Note is still uncertain due to the possibility of increased regulation by the US government.
