Nuveo has collaborated with TAITO to recreate the legendary game Space Invaders as an exquisite timepiece. This limited edition collection elevates digital heritage to mechanical art through design and technology.
The watch dial has a layered design. The outermost ring indicates the hours, with a translucent plate underneath. Beneath that, a minute disc moves, while in the center, the famous squid-shaped Space Invaders circles the dial, indicating the seconds.
The central squid invader, known in Japan as “Ika,” was one of the game’s key symbols. This little character was a challenging target and now moves constantly on the watch’s dial, evoking nostalgia.
The watch comes in four colors, each limited to 125 pieces. The Plasma Pink shown here is the only one available at the moment, while Solar Yellow, Galaxy Green, and Invader Indigo are also available. These colors vividly capture the game’s 8-bit visuals. The silicone strap connects seamlessly to the watch body, giving it a sleek look.
Technically, this watch demonstrates the mastery of maintaining accurate timekeeping while implementing a dial made up of multiple layers. Each layer must be perfectly balanced, and the translucent materials must allow light to pass through while maintaining durability. The domed mineral lens recreates the feel of old CRT displays.
The IKAWA numerals are luminous, but do not glow in their original neon colors. The transparent window on the back of the watch provides a fun way to observe the automatic movement. The watch is water resistant to 5 ATM and comes with a 2-year warranty.
