Zoom has announced that it is dropping the word “video” from its official name and rebranding as an “AI-first” company. CEO Eric S. Yuan announced in a blog post on the 25th that the company would change its name from “Zoom Video Communications Inc.” to “Zoom Communications Inc.” Zoom has enjoyed great success as a video conferencing platform during the pandemic, but now it wants to shed that identity and transform into an AI-based work platform.
Since its founding in 2011, Zoom has provided software that allows users to easily conduct video conferences. During the pandemic, its usage has skyrocketed, and by 2020, its usage has increased by 19,00%, showing explosive growth. However, CEO Yuan emphasized the need for change, saying, “Zoom’s future lies beyond simple video conferencing.”
Zoom’s new direction focuses on AI technology. The company is automating everyday tasks such as meeting summaries and chat drafts through the ‘AI Companion’ released last year. Recently, it also challenged the productivity tool market by introducing ‘Zoom Docs’, which is similar to Google Docs.
“AI companions act as digital assistants that help users reduce their workload and focus on more important things,” said CEO Yuan. He predicted that in the future, AI technology will be used to implement “digital twins” that can attend meetings and make decisions on behalf of users. He added that this change will become the basis for creating innovative work environments such as the four-day workweek.
Zoom will continue to develop intuitive and easy-to-use products in the future, and plans to maximize work productivity and efficiency through an AI-first strategy. Zoom, which has faced a growth slowdown after the pandemic, seems to be trying to differentiate itself from competitors such as Microsoft and Google through this rebranding and secure new competitiveness in line with the AI era.
Zoom continues to take on new challenges to move beyond its image as a video conferencing company and establish itself as a key platform for the coming AI era.
