OpenAI bought the Chat.com domain. Now when you type Chat.com, it goes to ChatGPT. Sam Altman just put the URL chat.com on X. OpenAI also bought the iconic domain ai.com last year for $1,100.
Chat.com is one of the oldest domains, having been registered in September 1996. It was acquired privately by HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah for $10 million. Shah said in March of last year that he had sold it to an unnamed buyer, OpenAI. Shah said he was receiving OpenAI stock rather than cash, but neither party would disclose the exact price. Shah said he sold it for a profit, and according to domain value estimate site namebio.com, it is likely worth at least $15.5 million.
