Hypnosis Documentary: The Story of a Legendary Album Cover Design

British design group Hipgnosis' documentary 'Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis)' has been released.

Hipgnosis has been active for about 15 years since 1968 and has created world-famous Pink Floyd's [The Dark Side of the Moon] and album cover art for Genesis, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Paul McCartney.

It opens in art cinemas around the world, but not in Korea. You can watch it streaming on iTunes.

The legendary Pink Floyd's Prism Pyramid album cover appeared in the world in 1973. It also holds the Guinness record for staying on the Billboard charts for 741 weeks.

Pink Floyd's Rick Wright requested 'an image that is clear, elegant, graphic but not photographic'. Inspired by standard physics textbooks, Hipgnosis' Storm Sougerson used prisms to light the important aspects of Pink Floyd's concerts.

It's the perfect graphic representation of the album's name, which symbolizes the fragmentation of the ego. The inlay is a picture of a heartbeat, and the enclosed poster uses a picture of the pyramids Sogerson took himself in Egypt.

📕 Editor's Notes

The album cover, influenced by Rene Magritte, looks sophisticated even now. As the LP version declined, Hypnosis was disbanded in 1982, but it is amazing that the LP era is back. After going through the CD and streaming era, it seems that the album cover is attracting attention again as it is reborn as an interior accessory that reveals my taste.
