OpenAI has begun the public rollout of its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.6. Previously, GPT-5.6 was the subject of regulatory controversy as it was provided exclusively to government-approved organizations during a restricted preview period. About two weeks later, following approval for public distribution from the U.S. Trump administration, it became possible to launch the model for general users and enterprises. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described GPT-5.6 as the most outstanding model the company has ever created.

GPT-5.6 has been introduced as OpenAI's next-generation model family, consisting of Sol, Terra, and Luna. OpenAI anticipates that this model will enhance the existing ChatGPT experience and serve as a foundation for handling complex tasks more reliably. In particular, the public launch of GPT-5.6 has served as an opportunity to re-emphasize OpenAI's model competitiveness in the generative AI market. The relationship between the launch of AI models and government approval procedures is also drawing attention, given that the release took place after undergoing regulatory review.

OpenAI also announced a new AI agent, ChatGPT Work, on the same day. ChatGPT Work is a service that combines the capabilities of ChatGPT and Codex, designed to allow general users—not just developers—to utilize Codex's task processing power for non-coding tasks. It is interpreted as a tool aimed at improving the productivity of non-technical roles, such as document creation, task organization, and the automation of repetitive tasks. This service also operates based on the GPT-5.6 model family. Through GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work, OpenAI is strengthening its strategy to simultaneously expand the markets for personal AI assistants and business AI agents.
