Google’s AI research tool, NotebookLM, has added a feature that summarizes uploaded data into a 60-second vertical video. Users can create short videos on specific topics by uploading documents or materials to Notebook and selecting Video and Shorts from the Studio menu. The output combines AI-generated images with narration.
This feature is essentially an extension of the existing Audio Overviews and Video Overviews. NotebookLM has already provided the ability to summarize documents like a podcast or convert them into video explanations. This Shorts format is designed to help you quickly skim through long materials.
Currently, it is primarily available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and is initially available in English. Google plans to expand the feature to free users later.
A significant change lies in the format of summaries. Until now, AI summaries have focused on methods that compress information, such as text, tables, and audio. NotebookLM’s short-form videos transform research materials into a viewing style familiar to social media. Users can grasp the key points through video before reading long documents, and it is highly likely that the methods of sharing education, research, and reports will also shift toward shorter, more visual formats.
