Android now supports iPhone AirDrop

Google has introduced a feature in the Pixel 10 series that allows direct file transfers between iPhones. This means Android's QuickShare is now compatible with Apple's AirDrop. This is a welcome change for consumers, as file transfer between the two operating systems has been previously blocked.

Google implemented this feature independently, without any separate collaboration. When you open AirDrop on an iPhone or iPad (macOS), switching the settings to Everyone allows Pixel 10 users to discover that device via QuickShare and send files. Conversely, when you launch AirDrop on an iPhone, your Pixel 10 device appears in the list and transfers begin upon approval. They emphasized that the transfer process is a direct connection between devices and does not involve a server.

Security verification was also conducted. Google stated that the app underwent a penetration test by an external security firm following an internal security team review. They explained that the implementation prevented additional information from being exposed during transmission. The VP of Android Security stated that the Rust-based implementation, which ensures memory safety, provides high stability.

This feature is currently only available on the Pixel 10 series. Google has stated that it plans to expand to more Android devices in the future. However, the default setting on iPhones is Contacts Only, requiring Everyone mode to be enabled for 10 minutes. Google has stated that it hopes to work with Apple to support Contacts-based mode.

Analysts say this feature was made possible by regulatory changes in the European Union. Under the Digital Markets Act, the EU restricted Apple's proprietary AWDL protocol and mandated support for Wi-Fi Aware, a standard technology from the Wi-Fi Alliance. This change standardized AirDrop's device-to-device connection method, opening the way for Android manufacturers to access the technology.

Following the introduction of RCS, which improved iPhone messaging compatibility, and the location tracking warning feature, Google has been making several attempts to bridge the gap between operating systems. This update is seen as a continuation of that trend. The experience of limited functionality depending on the operating system selected is gradually being alleviated, improving user convenience.
