Samsung Galaxy XR unveiled

Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy XR, a headset-style mobile device, in Korea on October 22nd. The Galaxy XR is the first device to feature the Android XR platform, jointly developed by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm. Users can naturally control content in their space using voice, gaze, and gestures. Google Gemini and Gemini Live are pre-installed, understanding the surrounding context and seamlessly facilitating tasks. A prime example is searching YouTube for videos, selecting results with a glance, and executing actions with a fingertip. It supports immersive experiences ranging from sports broadcasts to entertainment and even game play.

The hardware features the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform, along with precision sensors, a camera, and a microphone. It accurately recognizes head, hand, eye movements, and voice to enable natural interaction. A 4K micro OLED display and two-way speakers deliver clear image quality and spatial sound. It weighs 545g. With the pass-through mode, you can instantly find information about objects in front of you using Circle to Search. Users who require prescription correction can get tested at Davichi Optical and order Essilor lenses, which can be magnetically attached. The price is 140,000 won.

The Android-based app ecosystem will also remain intact. Many Google services and mobile apps, including Google Maps, Photos, YouTube XR, Chrome, and Meet, will work. XR content from global partners such as MLB, NBA, Adobe, Calm, and Amaze VR will be available. In Korea, Naver Chijijik-exclusive XR content has also been announced.

The Galaxy XR was released simultaneously in Korea and the US. It is priced at 2.69 million won. Purchases made on Samsung.com offer interest-free installments of up to 36 months. Samsung Store Experience Zones are available in seven stores nationwide. Purchasers will receive 10 subscription benefits, including Gemini AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass. Starting with the Galaxy XR, Samsung plans to expand the Android XR ecosystem into various form factors. It is developing next-generation smart glasses with Google and is also partnering with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.
