Paris Basketball, the professional basketball team in Paris, has unveiled a new visual identity. Led by French agency Yard, the rebranding visually combines the symbolism of Paris and its basketball heritage, with "light" as its central theme. Drawing inspiration from Paris's nickname, the "City of Light," light was chosen as a metaphor for the city's pride and the potential and talent of its rising players.
The new emblem combines the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower with the shape of a basketball, capturing both the symbolism of the city and the energy of sports. Initially hesitant to use the Eiffel Tower, the light emanating from its summit was a symbol of Paris, prompting a proactive interpretation. The result was a logo that intuitively captures the city's identity, with a powerful luminous effect.
The color scheme reinterprets the existing palette, emphasizing movement and dynamism. The "i" dot in the logo and wordmark is accented with a light point, establishing it as a core element of the identity. The monogram's "P" loop incorporates a shooting star design, reinforcing the brand concept. The goal was to create a simple yet instantly recognizable city symbol, much like the New York Yankees' "NY" logo.
The new typeface draws inspiration from the classic typography of basketball culture and the heritage of Parisian printing. Its two styles, regular and italic, provide a unified visual language across the uniforms, the court, and communications.
In its first season since its rebranding, Paris Basketball achieved a successful turning point by winning the French Championship. The new identity has become a symbol of the city's light, the team's passion, and the future of French basketball.
