Google has released a new interface for its Phone app that uses Material 3 Expressive design to some beta users. The overhaul goes beyond a simple visual style and focuses on making the overall app flow and functionality more intuitive.
The most noticeable change is the reorganization of the bottom navigation bar. The existing 'Favorites' tab has been removed and integrated into the new 'Home' tab as a 'Favorites Collection'. The 'Contacts' tab has also disappeared, and in its place, a 'Keypad' tab has been newly placed in the center, replacing the existing floating action button. As a result, the bottom bar has been simplified to a total of three tabs.
In addition, the call log function has been simplified. Previously, calls from the same person were nested in one entry, but now they are separated and listed in a single chronological list, making it easier to quickly identify missed or received calls.
The incoming call screen is also changing. Users can answer or reject calls with a new horizontal swipe gesture, which is a result of user feedback that aims to reduce misoperations when taking the phone out of a pocket.
Google explains that these updates are “aimed at making the experience of your app simpler and easier from start to finish.” The new design and features will be rolled out sequentially to the public beta group over the next few weeks, although not all features will be available at once, and some Material 3 Expressive elements may be rolled out in limited quantities.
