Dia, the AI web browser that follows Arc

Dia is a new AI-centric web browser from Browser Company after Arc. Browser Company CEO Josh Miller admitted that the previous Arc had a high learning difficulty and little practical benefit, which led to its failure in popularization. The Dia project, which began development in December 2024, aims to overcome the limitations of the existing Arc and create an AI experience that naturally blends into the user's flow. It is currently only available on macOS 14 or later, Macs based on the M1 chip, and is being distributed first to users with an email associated with an Arc account. Other users must be invited or register for the waiting list to use it.

It is designed to allow users to leverage AI capabilities directly in the browser itself, without having to visit sites like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude directly. Dia is based on Chromium, an open source project by Google, providing a familiar user interface.

The heart of the browser is an AI chatbot integrated into the address bar. Users can type websites or search terms into this address bar, as well as ask questions, summarize documents, or analyze the contents of multiple tabs. The chatbot can also summarize information or draft a draft based on all open tabs.

The chatbot gradually learns your style through conversations with users, personalizing your speech, writing style, and coding preferences. If you enable the 'History' function, it can analyze your web usage history from the past week to provide more precise answers.

Another impressive feature is called 'Skills'. It helps you customize the browser's functionality by generating simple code. For example, if you ask for a reading layout, the chatbot will write HTML and CSS code for you. It's like a browser version of Siri Shortcuts.

Dia is not the first browser to integrate AI. Opera's Neon allows the creation of mini-apps using AI agents, and Google Chrome has also been adding AI-based features recently. However, Dia is different in that it is a browser designed with AI as its core from the beginning. It will be interesting to see what kind of experience this experiment, which uses AI as a basic browsing function, can give to users.
