Airbnb has introduced a system to automatically display the total price when searching for accommodations to address the problem of opacity in accommodation prices globally. Users can now see the price including all fees, excluding taxes, from the moment they search.
Airbnb users have complained that hidden costs, such as cleaning fees and service fees, make it difficult to see the actual cost. In response, Airbnb has been testing the total price display feature in some European countries, Australia, Canada, and Korea since 2019, and will introduce the feature as an option in about 200 countries, including the United States, in 2022. In 2023, the feature was expanded to include price filters, maps, and detail pages, and approximately 17 million users have used the feature.
With this change, Airbnb has eliminated the previous optional toggle feature and is now displaying the total price by default from search results all the way up to the last step of booking. The price shown is before tax, and in some countries, the price shown includes tax.
This change is likely to have a positive impact on both guests and hosts. Starting in 2023, Airbnb will allow hosts to compare prices with similar listings, allowing them to see what guests are actually paying. In 2024, four out of five hosts used Airbnb’s pricing tool, and more than 2 million people used the “Compare Similar Listings” feature to see the average price.
Airbnb also offers a variety of price-saving features, including search tips for weekly and monthly stays, making it easier for travelers to find accommodation that fits their budget.
Airbnb said, “Transparent pricing creates a better experience for both guests and hosts,” and “This update is an important milestone in creating a clearer and fairer accommodation environment.”
