Elon Musk's AI company xAI has unveiled its latest chatbot model, Grok3. Grok3 announced that it outperformed OpenAI's GPT-4o, Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, and DeepSec's V3 models in math, science, and coding benchmark tests.
The name Grok is inspired by Robert Heinlein's science fiction novel "Stranger in a Strange Land" and means to understand something deeply. Musk himself made the announcement along with his engineers.
In addition to the base model, Grok3 consists of a mini-model with enhanced reasoning capabilities and a mini-version with increased speed. These models are designed to analyze complex problems and perform rigorous fact-checking. They are similar to OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSec’s R1, and utilize continuous reasoning techniques.
A new DeepSearch feature is also getting a lot of attention. It analyzes the Internet and social media X to provide a summary of your question. Musk said DeepSearch will cut search times by a third.
The Grok 3 is available to X’s paid Premium+ subscribers and will be available to the API in the future. Musk said the Grok 3 will have a voice mode and that DeepSearch will be coming to the API in the coming weeks. He also mentioned that the company plans to open source its predecessor, the Grok 2.
