YouTube's new red reveal

YouTube has updated its brand color, moving from a solid, intense red to a more purple hue and introducing a smooth, flowing red-magenta gradient.

The YouTube design team explained that this change was a process of adding a modern feel while maintaining the identity of the platform. Robin Lee, the visual design lead, said that after analyzing YouTube’s old design elements, color was identified as one of the key elements that needed to be changed. He emphasized that this redesign was aimed at refinement rather than innovation.

The new red also helped solve technical issues. The existing pure RGB red had issues such as appearing orange on some screens or causing burn-in on TV screens. To solve this, the team adjusted the red to a blue hue. To reinforce the brand identity, they developed a gradient that added magenta. The design team explained that magenta symbolizes imagination and progress.

Along with the new colors, the way the UI is applied has also changed. We have established a strategy to prevent the overuse of brand colors and to only use them in areas that require emphasis. Representative changes have been applied to the logo, icon, progress bar, and subscription button.

The motion design has also been improved. The progress bar is thinner and moves faster than before, and has a new gradient. Motion designer David Amukai explains that adding natural movement was important because YouTube is a video-centric platform.

Accessibility was also taken into consideration. The new colors have been modified in various ways according to brightness and contrast to improve readability. In addition, the structure of UI elements has been reorganized so that information is not conveyed solely through color.

YouTube plans to gradually improve its design system as a whole, starting with this color overhaul. Product Manager Linda Hong said YouTube’s visual system will continue to evolve to reflect the dynamics of the platform.
