MS Cloud Outage: The World Stops

Last Friday, airline systems, games, broadcasting, and banking systems around the world were paralyzed. A sensor update file for CrowdStrike's security platform 'Falcon' caused a conflict with Microsoft's Windows operating system. It affected more than 8.5 million Windows devices. Microsoft said it was 1% for all Windows devices, but it caused inconvenience to important services such as airlines and banks.

Airports across the US, Europe and Asia were in chaos, causing flight delays. British broadcasters cut off their morning news and Alaska’s 911 call center was affected. Domestic airlines Air Premia, Jeju Air, Eastar Jet and Jetstar Airlines had check-in suspended.

What used to be a joke in movies has become a reality. It reminds me of the drama where you pilot a spaceship and the Windows blue screen appears and the Earth is destroyed. The recovery method has been released, but there are still many companies that have not been able to completely recover.

Security software broke security. It had a huge impact on the entire industry, especially. It wasn't just a system failure, but an incident that threatened national security. If it wasn't a simple error, but ransomware or spyware, you can't even imagine what the aftermath would have been. When designing a product for good UX, it's important to know how to recover from errors, but it seems that the difficulty of returning to the original state at the system level made the aftermath worse. This incident made me realize that I need to reduce dependency and distribute risk.
