Kodak Super 8: A legend revived after 50 years

Kodak has released a new Super 8 film camera. The actual product was released eight years after its announcement at CES in 2016.

The Super 8, the ultimate camera for amateur filmmakers, is a camera that best matches the word 'Shot' as it is a camera that shoots by pulling the trigger of a gun.

The film used is an 8mm wide film developed and distributed by Kodak in 1965. It was given the name Super because the image recording area was wider than the typical 8mm.

It will be sold in limited quantities in the US on December 4th. The price is a whopping $5,495, which is approximately 7.13 million won in Korean currency.

The new Super 8 camera, which anyone interested in movies will know about, has been released. Convenience features were added while maintaining existing usability. It is also famous for the movie 'Super 8' produced by Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams.

In the 70s, when the Super 8 was released, it had a similar status to disposable film cameras in the video industry due to its ease of use. From this time on, home camcorders' aesthetic images with unique textures became popular thanks to the modern retro craze.

Roughly combined geometric shapes stimulate a retro sensibility. The yellow and red colors that symbolize Kodak are used as accents on the black body, but the yellow used on the entire back of the camera is a bit burdensome. The texture of the surface is like an old camera, making me want to touch it with my hands.

The modern reinterpretation of Super 8 has a 4-inch LCD viewfinder for checking the video to be captured, a micro SD card for audio recording, HDM for connecting to an external monitor, and can shoot video at 24fps for 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

What you need to remember is that it is a ‘film camera’. Images are not stored digitally. When you send the completed Super 8 film to Kodak, it is digitized through Kodak's darkroom and the results are returned to you. It costs about $50.

The names “home use” and “amateur use” no longer fit. In an age where anyone can take videos thanks to the spread of smartphones, this is a top-quality product for enthusiasts who want to remember traditional movies. It's like the V12 Vantage Roadster, the last V12 internal combustion engine car released by Aston Martin. I think the used Super 8 might have greater symbolism. It's also much cheaper.
