BBC EARTH: Nature as you see it is the main character

BBC Earth is rebranding. BBC Earth is a brand that contains documentaries such as Planet Earth and The Green Planet that have been viewed by over 1 billion people around the world. Featuring natural history and science content from BBC Studios, BBC Earth has introduced new worlds, from the world of microscopy to space telescopes.

It is led by BBC Studios Creative, the BBC's in-house creative group. I'm looking forward to the BBC's flagship series Planet Earth III when it launches this fall.

👁️ Designer Eye

The brand has evolved successfully since its TV launch eight years ago, allowing it to unify its visual language across all touchpoints. The new visual identity represents a ‘window to the world’.

High-quality nature video, which is the essence of the studio, is played in the background. In the center appears the capital letter EARTH, which is tightly combined with the BBC logo. They appear from bottom to top, as if showing cards one by one.

A circular ring with a glass texture surrounds the logo, with a blurred background. The lens-like ring expresses the view of the world, but also looks like a round Earth. The subject is clearly visible in the center, moving in and out of the logo and ring rather than simply playing in the background.

Beyond this ring, a variety of nature is expressed. The moment when dew falls, a volcano erupting hotly, jungle plants full of vitality, a falling meteorite, and a roaring tiger are captured in fascinating scenes. It also represents humans living in nature, such as mountain climbers and sky divers.

📕 Editor's Notes

This branding is perfect for brands that mainly deal with video media. There are many places that express nature itself, but it is wonderful to create a unique impression through design. Recently, there have been many cases of using similar palettes and symbolic shapes as anchors of identity to express pleasant experiences through illustrations, but this time, BBC EARTH intuitively conveyed their essence without much explanation and created a visually beautiful expression. I find it refreshing to capture the unique impression of the brand while revealing the essential nature without any additional elements.

It's also impressive that this work was created in their own creative studio. These days, there are many cases where all branding is left to a talented design studio, but it's great that the branding was improved internally to a high degree of completion. I look forward to seeing more branding cases that capture the essence of oneself in the future.
