This is a map-centric brand design for BAS.MY, the nationwide public bus service introduced by the Malaysian Ministry of Transport. The design team collaborated with HRF Type, Wan Loong Sia, David Ho, Louie Lee, Seng Kit, and others.
BAS.MY is a public bus service created to enhance connectivity in regional cities across Malaysia. Its goal is to expand public transportation accessibility by connecting developed and growing areas. It also offers free rides to seniors, students, and people with disabilities. In Johor Bahru, the existing myBAS Johor Bahru has been rebranded as BAS.MY Johor Bahru and operates under the SBST program promoted by the Malaysian Ministry of Transport and the Agency for Public Transport and Development (APAD).
The centerpiece of this project is the bus route map. While railway systems invest heavily in route map design, bus networks are often relatively overlooked. BAS.MY has made this the core of its brand. The bus's appearance, route information, maps, and color scheme are connected by a single language.
The map design was based on actual travel experiences. In particular, it took into account elderly passengers who use printed maps more frequently than digital ones. Clear typography, organized spacing, and strong color contrasts make the complex bus network easier to read. The goal is not just to create a visually appealing map, but to help you avoid getting lost.
The visual system is structured around dots, colors, and typography. By applying the same rules used for graphic elements on buses to the map, passengers are enabled to perceive bus stops, route maps, and vehicles as a single service. Rather than a system where the brand and information design are separate, it is a structure where the information system itself becomes the brand.
