ChatGPT Images 2.6, turn photos and sketches into animated GIFs

OpenAI has released 'ChatGPT Images 2.6,' which adds movement to photos and sketches. You can create looping GIFs by describing actions with text or inserting existing images. It is a feature that transforms brand mascots, product photos, hand-drawn characters, and more into animations.

The official announcement introduced the process of turning a pen-drawn owl on paper into an animated character. OpenArt created an office worker character that reacts to stock price changes. The figure, desk, and background were maintained, while the facial expressions and arm movements were changed in sequence. This is a method of constructing motion based on the form of a still image.

Town, a developer of AI assistants for business use, applied the character 'Monty' to animations that indicate input status. The character moves above the message window to convey the system's status. They presented use cases ranging from reaction images for social media and interface feedback to storyboards for reviewing movements before video production.

A feature to store reference images has also been added. You can use images of yourself, your pet, or a character for new projects without having to re-upload them. OpenAI explained that it has also improved performance in preserving details of characters, products, and brands when images are modified multiple times.

We have added image markup and SVG export to the API to indicate where to modify. We provide Flare for quick generation and Sunburst models for detailed representation. Images 2.6 will be available on all subscription plans in ChatGPT and Codex on web, desktop, and mobile starting November 4.
