Figma Brings Code and Planning Documents to Canvas

Figma has announced an update that connects design and code, as well as planning documents and actual data. This was revealed at 'Config India 2026' held in Bengaluru, India on October 15. Key features include 'Code Layer,' which executes code on the canvas; 'Figma Specs,' which records product intent and requirements; and the integration of 'Payload,' which connects data and content.

The code layer places a working prototype with actual code next to the design. You can create it by converting design frames or importing GitHub repositories. It also supports capturing webpage code with a Chrome extension or starting by making a request to AI in a blank layer. Teams can view both the screen and the behavior together on the same canvas.

Figma Specs is a document that covers both the design background and technical requirements. You can place the document next to the design to compare various options or write technical specifications based on the design. It also provides a feature to organize feedback shared on Pigzam into Specs. The layout is designed so that text describing the screens is placed within the workspace, allowing team members and AI agents to refer to it together.

The payload connects databases, content management, file storage, and login functions to Figma Make and the code layer. It allows you to manage content to be displayed on the screen and store data, enabling you to handle situations where actual data changes.

A key feature of this update is a configuration that places visuals, executable code, and documentation in a single workspace. It connects these elements to allow you to review how the screen looks, how it works, and why it was designed that way. Code layers and specs are currently in public beta, while payload integration will be rolled out sequentially to all plans.
