DOTS, unveiled by OpenAI at the San Francisco DevDay on September 29, 2026, is an always-on AI agent that operates within ChatGPT. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, it continues tasks through apps connected by the user and its own cloud computer. Users provide DOTS with goals, and DOTS displays ongoing, scheduled, and completed tasks in its profile.
Dots is being rolled out to Pro users sequentially. The EU, Switzerland, and the UK are excluded from the initial rollout. Business Premium users can use it in supported regions, and Enterprise users can use it if an administrator enables the beta.
In terms of form, abstract AI functions are represented by small characters. Users can set a name and avatar, and select a default character or a pet. Fast Company introduced character examples such as triangles, rabbits, and clouds. This is a design feature intended to make it look more like a "partner to work with" rather than a chatbot window. The key to this design is bundling the complexity of functions into a structure of characters, names, handles, and profiles.
